  • The Jewish standard of judgement was accepted, and they did not form part of the Hebrew Bible.
  • The first Maccabees is a simple, direct, historical narrative of the forty years' struggle from 175 to 135 B.C., from the accession of Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) to the death of Simon, the youngest of the Maccabean brothers.
  • The Second book of the Maccabees covers part of the same period of history, but the record is more rhetorical and ornate.
